Arroyo shuts down Brewers

Published by gilson at 9:34 pm under Game Recaps Edit This

Bronson Arroyo pitched 6 1/3 innings of 1 run ball Tuesday night, sending the Brewers (2-6) to their fourth consecutive loss.

Arroyo walked four, but only allowed four hits.  The only damage done to Arroyo was a solo homerun by JJ Hardy in the 2nd.

Manny Parra got the start for the Brewers.  His line was very similar to Arroyo’s (6IP, 3H, 4BB), but he allowed 3ER.

Parra had two good innings to begin the game, but a leadoff walk to Willy Taveras in the 3rd followed by a Jerry Hairston homerun to left put the Reds on top, 3-1.

That’s all the support Arroyo would need, as he and the bullpen put up 7 scoreless innings after Hardy’s homerun.

Craig Counsell got the start over Rickie Weeks, who took a 94mph fastball off the jaw yesterday.  Manager Ken Macha was going to give Rickie today off anyways, even though Weeks could’ve started tonight.

Carlos Villanueva struggled again, and now has a 11.25 ERA after eight games.  He allowed three runs in the top of the ninth on four hits and a walk.  It’d be surprising to see him last much longer in the closer’s role, even though tonight wasn’t a save situation.  Perhaps the blown save on Saturday really rattled him.

The Reds (3-3) and Brewers are back at it tomorrow night at Miller Park, where Braden Looper (0-0, 1.80) will face Micah Owings (0-0, 0.00).  Looper had a strong first start last Friday against the Cubs, and will look to carry that over to Wednesday and help stop the Brewers’ four game skid.

Game time is 7:05p.m. CST.
